Brake fluid flush: due, or sold?

This is one of the ones that is usually genuinely due. Brake fluid absorbs water, water lowers its boiling point, and the manufacturers that publish an interval for it are not inventing a service to sell — the mechanism is in a federal standard. What is worth arguing with is the number on the windscreen sticker, which is not the manual’s number and was not written by anyone who read it.

Replace them. Resurfacing made sense when rotors were thick and expensive, and on most cars now they are neither — the rotor has to finish above its stamped minimum after the cut, and a modern rotor that is worn enough to need turning frequently cannot get there. Ask for the measurement before you pay anyone to try.

Pads only, unless the rotor is under the minimum thickness stamped on it or the shop can show you scoring you can catch a fingernail in. The rotor has a number cast or stamped into its hat, that number is the whole test, and it costs nothing to ask for the measurement beside it.

A brake job is due when the lining is at the wear limit, not when someone with a flashlight says the word “soon”. That is the whole test, and it is a measurement rather than an opinion. Get the number before you get the quote, because the number is what tells you whether you are buying a repair or buying a conversation.
