Before authorising a booster, have the shop confirm the vacuum supply is good — the hose, the check valve and, on a car that has one, the vacuum pump. A hard pedal is the booster’s headline symptom and it is also what a split hose or a failed check valve produces, and those are not $1,000 parts.
This is the most expensive job in the brake set by a distance, and the parts line is most of it, which makes the diagnosis worth more than usual.
What a brake booster replacement costs
RepairPal’s estimator, checked 4 September 2026, puts it at $965 to $1,108 — parts $681–$690, labour $285–$418.
Two things stand out against the rest of the brake jobs on this site. The parts line is roughly two-thirds of the total, where on a pad job it is a little over half. And the labour is $285–$418 where a pad job is $122–$179, which is a real difference: the booster sits between the pedal and the master cylinder, usually against the bulkhead, and getting to it is most of the work.

A CR-V is nearly three times an Altima for the same named job. If your car sits at the top of that table, a national average is not a useful check on your quote — the vehicle-specific figure is.
The symptom, and what else produces it
The booster multiplies the force your foot puts into the master cylinder, using engine vacuum to do it. When it stops working, the pedal goes hard and high and the car takes much more effort to stop. That is unmistakable and it is not subtle.
What produces the same hard pedal without the booster having failed:
- A split, perished or disconnected vacuum hose between the intake and the booster.
- A failed check valve, the one-way valve that holds vacuum in the booster when engine vacuum drops.
- A failed vacuum pump, on the many modern engines — turbocharged and diesel especially — that do not make enough manifold vacuum on their own.
- A leak elsewhere in the vacuum system drawing down the supply.
The order matters because of the arithmetic. A hose and a check valve are inexpensive parts with modest labour. The booster is a $681–$690 part with $285–$418 of labour on RepairPal’s figures. Diagnosing in the cheap-to-expensive direction is not scepticism about the shop; it is the order any competent diagnosis runs in anyway.
The check itself is quick and does not need a lift: with the engine off, the pedal is pumped to deplete stored vacuum, then held down while the engine starts. On a system with good vacuum and a working booster the pedal sinks under your foot. A pedal that does not move is the finding, and the next question is whether the vacuum reaching the booster is there at all.
What the diagnostic fee is buying
This is a job where paying for diagnosis is straightforwardly cheaper than not. The gap between “replace the booster” and “replace a check valve” is most of a thousand dollars on the figures above, and the difference between them is a vacuum gauge and twenty minutes.
Two questions worth asking when the quote arrives:
- What was the vacuum reading at the booster? If nobody measured it, the booster has not been diagnosed — it has been inferred from a symptom it shares with cheaper faults.
- Is the diagnostic fee credited against the repair if I authorise it? Many shops do this and most will say so if asked.
When the booster genuinely is the answer
It does fail, and when it has, it is due. The pattern that points at the booster rather than its supply:
- Vacuum confirmed good at the booster, and the pedal still does not sink on start-up.
- A hiss from the pedal area that changes when the pedal is pressed, with the hose and valve already ruled out — that is air being drawn through the booster’s own diaphragm.
- Brake fluid found inside the booster, which points at a master cylinder seal that has failed rearward and usually means both parts.
- An idle that drops or stumbles when the brake pedal is pressed, indicating the booster is leaking vacuum into the engine.
If that is the finding, authorise it, use the vehicle-specific row above rather than the national range to check the total, and expect the parts line to dominate.
A hard pedal is not a job to sit on while you shop for opinions — the car stops much less well than it should. Get the vacuum test done quickly, and let it decide whether you are buying a valve or a booster. The rest of the quote deserves the same treatment as any other, which is what a brake job actually costs.
